RAPP’s ethical compass is guided by five core principles of ethical journalism:
1. Truth and accuracy
We should always strive for accuracy, give all the relevant facts we have, and ensure
that they have been checked and reliable before publication.
2. Independence
Journalists must be independent voices; we should not act, formally or
informally, on behalf of special interests whether political, corporate, or cultural. We
should avoid conflicts of interest and ensure transparency in affiliations.
3. Fairness and Impartiality
Impartial reporting builds trust and confidence, we should
engage in fair news gathering, selection, and editing while protecting confidential
sources.
4. Accountability
When we commit errors we must correct them and our expressions of
regret must be sincere, not cynical.
5. Loyalty to the Public
Serving the public interest and putting the needs of the audience first.
The RAPP code is based on the Global Charter of Ethics for Journalists (link naar pdf) and aligns with the code of the Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ)
